New York Attorney General Letitia James has issued a consumer alert with guidance for homeowners seeking snow removal services following heavy snowfall in several regions of the state. Areas including New York City, Long Island, Westchester, and the Hudson Valley have experienced significant snow accumulation and blizzard conditions.

“As we dig out from this blizzard, many homeowners across the state may look to hire help to clear the snow around their houses and driveways,” said Attorney General James. “It has been a long time since parts of our state have experienced heavy snowfall like this, and I encourage New Yorkers to follow these tips to stay safe and ensure they receive the services they are using their hard-earned money to pay for.”

Attorney General James recommended that residents choose contractors who have established reputations or come recommended by trusted sources. She also advised checking if local authorities require contractor licensing and ensuring any chosen provider meets those requirements. Homeowners should consult resources such as the Better Business Bureau for complaints before hiring a contractor.

Payment practices were also addressed; residents are encouraged not to pay in full via instant electronic payment methods like Zelle until work is completed. Using checks or credit cards is suggested for maintaining proof of payment. Additionally, consumers should secure a signed contract with full contact details of the contractor—post office box addresses should be avoided—and verify contractor identity by reviewing their driver’s license information.

Other suggestions include recording vehicle license plate numbers used for plowing and detailing any special service needs within contracts, such as early morning access requirements for emergency responders.

The Attorney General urged New Yorkers to report concerns about contractors or potential price gouging either online or by calling 800-771-7755.

The Office of the New York Attorney General serves as a public law enforcement agency and legal advocate throughout New York according to its official website.
