New York Attorney General Letitia James has issued a warning to New Yorkers about potential fraudulent charities in the wake of severe flash flooding in central Texas. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) advises caution when donating to relief efforts, emphasizing the importance of contributing to legitimate organizations.

Attorney General James expressed her sympathy for those affected by the flooding, stating, “My heart breaks for the Camp Mystic families and all Texans impacted by this devastating flash flooding, and I am grateful to the first responders who have jumped into action to care for their neighbors.” She urged New Yorkers to be vigilant against scams and ensure donations are directed to trustworthy groups.

The OAG provided several tips for safe and effective donations. They recommend verifying email solicitations by contacting the charity directly and exercising caution with social media or fundraising sites. Donors should research organizers thoroughly and only contribute to campaigns led by known individuals. It is also advised to check websites like disasterphilanthropy.org for information on reputable charities involved in relief efforts.

Additionally, donors are encouraged to inquire about how their contributions will be used, especially with newly formed organizations that may lack experience or infrastructure. The OAG advises against cash donations, suggesting checks payable directly to charities or online contributions through official websites.

For those suspecting fraudulent activities or misrepresentation by organizations, complaints can be filed with the Charities Bureau or reported via phone at 212-416-8401.
