New York Attorney General Letitia James has released security camera footage related to the investigation into the death of John Bonds. Bonds died on June 2, 2025, following a motor vehicle incident involving an off-duty officer from the Colonie Police Department on May 27, 2025.
The Office of Special Investigation (OSI) within the Attorney General’s Office made public footage from two security cameras near the incident. This release is in line with Attorney General James’ policy to share such footage during OSI investigations to promote transparency and public trust.
On May 27, shortly after 10:00 p.m., John Bonds was walking on Old Loudon Road in Latham when he was hit by a car driven by an off-duty CPD officer. Bonds was taken to a local hospital and remained there until his death on June 2.
According to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI reviews incidents where police or peace officers may have caused a person’s death through action or omission. This applies whether the officer is on-duty or off-duty and regardless of whether the decedent was armed or in custody. If OSI’s assessment suggests an officer might have caused the death, they conduct a full investigation.
The footage release does not imply any judgment regarding guilt or innocence in any criminal matter or potential charges against individuals involved.
Viewers are cautioned that the video contains potentially disturbing content.
