A Bronx resident, Carlos Rivas, was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography, according to an announcement from Jay Clayton, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. The complaint alleges that Rivas possessed hundreds of images and videos depicting pre-pubescent children engaged in sexually explicit conduct while he was employed at a school in the Bronx during the summer of 2024.

“As alleged, Carlos Rivas possessed hundreds of images and videos of child pornography while working at a Bronx school,” said U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton.  “Child pornography has no place anywhere in our society, particularly anywhere connected to a school.  Our devoted prosecutors and partners will unrelentingly fight this scourge.”

The investigation found that between July 14, 2024, and August 15, 2024, Rivas stored the illicit material on an electronic service provider’s file storage account. Some files were uploaded from an Internet Protocol address linked to the Bronx school where he worked.

Rivas, who is 22 years old and resides in the Bronx, faces one count of possession of child pornography involving images and videos of prepubescent minors and minors under the age of 12. The charge carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison. However, sentencing will be determined by a judge if there is a conviction.

Mr. Clayton commended Homeland Security Investigations for their work on the case. The prosecution is being managed by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rita Maxwell from the General Crimes Unit.

The charges are accusations at this stage; Rivas is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
