Jay Clayton, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has announced Sean Buckley as the new Deputy U.S. Attorney. Buckley comes from Kobre & Kim, where he worked since 2018 handling various securities and criminal regulatory matters.

Buckley’s previous experience includes nearly a decade at the U.S. Department of Justice, serving most recently as Co-Chief of the Terrorism and International Narcotics Unit. In that role, he managed international investigations related to terrorism financing and other complex issues across multiple regions.

From 2009 to 2018, Buckley was an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York dealing with national security and international crime cases.

Before his government service, Buckley practiced law at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP between 2003 and 2009. He holds degrees from Princeton University and the University of Virginia, where he earned both an M.A. and a J.D., receiving recognition for his service including awards from the Attorney General.

Clayton expressed enthusiasm about Buckley’s return: “We are excited to welcome Sean Buckley back to the Office as the Deputy United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York,” adding that Buckley is respected by his peers and embodies professionalism. Clayton also highlighted confidence in the leadership team formed by Buckley along with Amanda Houle and Jeff Oestricher.
