In a recent class-action lawsuit filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, Winson Chan, a Chinese American U.S. Army veteran, has accused The City University of New York (CUNY) and his supervisor, Lisa Beatha, of religious discrimination and coercion. Chan alleges that he was forced to participate in Transcendental Meditation sessions as a condition of his employment at CUNY’s Office of Veterans Affairs. The lawsuit claims this practice violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and New York state and city human rights laws. Chan also asserts that he faced retaliation after requesting a religious accommodation and was subjected to racial discrimination by Beatha. The case seeks damages for lost earnings, emotional distress, and punitive damages.
